Interior Door Finishing

  1. Protect your door from soiling, damage and moisture prior to finishing.
  2. Remove all handling marks with a thorough, light sanding over all surfaces of the door (180 grit or finer). Sand with the grain to avoid scratches. This must be done to ensure the best finish possible.
  3. Clean your door thoroughly after sanding to remove all dust.
  4. To achieve your desired results, always read and follow the directions supplied with your finish. Wood is a natural product. As such, different species will accept finishes differently.
  5. Apply the finish as soon as the door is machined and fitted, but before final hanging.
  6. Make sure all surfaces are sealed and finished, including the top, bottom and side edges of the stiles and rails.
  7. Be sure to follow the application instructions for your finish and top coat to achieve the maximum results. Compatible finishes are highly recommended. If possible, use the same manufacturer for all finishing products.
  8. The protective film on French doors is to help with the finishing process. Care must be given to prevent scratching the glass when removing this film after the door is finished. Sharp objects will scratch the glass.

Tip
Telling which way your door swings
Hinged Left Hinged Right

Before you order your prehung door, make sure you know which way it swings. The easiest way to tell the swing is to stand looking at the door so you can see the hinges. If the hinges are on the right side of the door it's a "hinged-right" door. If the hinges are on the left side of the door it's a "hinged-left" door.
